Hay Fishing Classic 2024 - Gadsby’s victory, reeling in the longest murray cod

Hay Lions Annual Fishing Classic was a resounding success, with a huge attendance by locals and people coming in from around the district.

There were an incredible 891 fish caught over the span of the competition, with 178 carp reeled in, 277 legal fish, 713 native fish, 277 legal native fish, four silver perch, and four golden perch (yellow belly).

Live music from Mildura band, The Setts, was enjoyed by all on Saturday evening, and the usual fantastic atmosphere was enjoyed by both locals, and visitors from around the district.

Kirsten Hutchings reeled in a snake during her fishing pursuits, taking out the open most unusual catch.

Tom Gadsby hooked an impressive 88cm cod, winning the open longest Murray Cod.

Hayden Marlin scored a 53cm yellow belly, the open longest Yellow Belly.

Open most native fish went to Jessica Hope Gawel, who had an impressive haul of nine legal size fish

Junior longest Murray Cod went to Xavier Vale, who snagged a respectable 73cm length cod.

George Field reeled in 14 Carp, scoring the Junior most carp.

Nev May won the raffle for entering fish.

Evan Gargaro took out the major prize, sailing away in the 399 Stacer Boat with 25hp Yamaha Motor and Trailer. Shaun Aylett scored the four nights away for 10 plus people to Ulladulla Bawley Point.

Billy Ryall will set off for the two nights, four people and reef fishing charter at Bermagui. John and Lisa Headon will no doubt get much use from their prize DJI Mini 2 Drone.

Aymee Wall won the Milwaukee pack, Simon Bunyan will paddle away in the kayak, Buck Howard scored the Yeti esky, Google TV Parker Milward won the google tv, the STIHL Chainsaw was taken by Troy Griffiths, Lachlan Ford walked away with the lawn mower, and win your weight in beer was won by ‘Becky’, a visitor.

Congratulations to the hard working volunteers who work so hard to make this successful event happen, year after year.
