The first of the Regional Juniors Singles Series tennis tournaments was held in Wagga on Sunday with 11 youngsters from Hay participating in a big field of 75 players.

Ben Taylor of Hay won the 10s boys event, as well as taking out this week’s AgFlyte and Foodworks awards.

Ben performed superbly, defeating the 2023 Regional Champion 6-3 in the final.

Congratulations to all those participants and to the encouragement, and support of parents, players and coaches.

Hay’s Alex Giddins was forced to withdraw and didn’t make the trip due to an accident.

Sadly, a replacement who had missed the entry deadline in the same age group and of the same standard was not allowed, despite the withdrawal making an unbalanced number.

The next tournament will be held in Albury on Sunday, February 25.

In other tennis news, with temperature depending, the 2024 Tennis Competition (various grades and formats) is set to kick off on the afternoon and evening of February 21.

Players can enter online or contact Tony.

Entries will be taken for men’s doubles, women’s doubles or mixed.

You can enter with your partner, or as an individually and request a partner.

All juniors will be contacted to confirm their play.

This will follow on from the last successful competition which involved 30 juniors, high school and primary school students in two grades.

Hay Public School and Hay Tennis Club will host for the first time the Western Zone pre-selection trials for the Riverina Public School team, which will be held this week.

February 25 will also be the start of Sunday mornings Hay junior community tennis.
