Hay War Memorial students participated in the first Riverina Region Athletics carnival in two years.

The team representing the school was one of the biggest in years and they all brought their A game.

All students tried their hardest and were an absolute credit to their school and the town of Hay. There were some outstanding results on the day.

Devlin Clarke started the campaign in the 1500m.

He ran a strong race to finish first and is off to state in his first ever CHS Athletics State Championships. Next on the track was Emily Shea who raced home to come second in the 12 years 200m, qualifying her for state champs as well.

Emily also qualified in the 100m after fighting hard to win her heat and come first overall. In the field events Issy Murray took herself to new heights and came second in high jump to qualify her for state as well! Nate Clarke had the biggest program out of all the Hay students and as usual he didn’t disappoint.

Nate ran a strong 200m sprint, drawing on his 800m fitness to come home strong for a close win and a PB. Next up was Nate’s favourite race.

Nate had his eye on the prize – the 800m Riverina record.

Coming out of the start Nate made short work of the first 200m in blistering pace, leaving the field well behind him. He completed his first 400m split in 59 seconds. Talking himself through the challenge he brought it home to a cheering crowd to take the record in 2:06.18.

The previous record has been held since 1988 at a time of 2:08.37. To take 2.19 seconds off a 34-year-old record is phenomenal. Congratulations Nate! He was pretty exhausted but managed to push himself through the 400m to place first, qualifying him for state in all three running events.

He also competed in long jump, where he came second off one jump after fouling his first two attempts, qualifying for this also.

Nate is now hoping to bring home his first CHS medal in September!

The CHS Sate Athletics Championships will be held September 7-9 and will be broadcast live through the School Sport Unit YouTube Channel.

We will all be cheering on our amazing athletes from here in Hay.
